Farm Sanctuary’s Humane Educator will play a significant and exciting role in development and implementation of a new curriculum focusing on farm animals and grounded in stories from our sanctuaries. The Humane Educator reports to the Director of Education & Strategic Initiatives
Responsibilities:
  • Outreach and Building School Relationships: While the curriculum is development, the Farm Sanctuary Humane Educator will be responsible for outreach to middle and high schools in the New York/New Jersey area and to establish a structure and plan for in-classroom instruction by the Farm Sanctuary Humane Educator during the 2016-2017 academic year.
  • In-Classroom Instruction: During the 2016-2017 academic year, the Farm Sanctuary Humane Educator will conduct in-classroom instruction with partner schools in the New York/New Jersey area and implement a corresponding impact measurement program. Continuously monitor the success of the humane education program and implement changes as necessary.
  • Distribution of Curriculum: When the curriculum is ready for distribution, Farm Sanctuary’s Humane Educator will create a national teacher outreach program designed to distribute the curriculum free of charge to as many educators as possible for use in schools across the U.S.
  • Volunteers: Work with Farm Sanctuary’s Volunteer Coordinator to recruit and train humane education volunteers.
  • Future Program Development: Support the Director of Education & Strategic Initiatives in assessing, developing, and implementing future phases of this program. Potential future duties will be based on organization priorities and program assessment and may include:
    • Adaptation of our curriculum for programming at Farm Sanctuary’s future New Jersey sanctuary including Summer Camps, After-School Program, and School Field Trips.
    • Integration of New Jersey sanctuary visits as part of in-classroom programming.
    • Support in the potential future hire and training of a humane educator in Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Washington DC, Miami, and other key cities.
    • Oversee the production of age-appropriate video materials for classroom viewing as a companion piece to the curriculum.
    • Lead teacher training seminars held at Farm Sanctuary’s shelters.
    • Develop a Farm Sanctuary youth advocacy program that provides support, resources, and community to students who have participated in our humane education program and are inspired to learn and do more to help farm animals.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required and relevant post graduate education preferred.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in curriculum development for middle or high-school age students preferred.
  • Knowledge of teaching methods to accommodate students’ varied learning processes and ample classroom instruction experience.
  • 2+ years classroom instruction experience
  • Proven professional interpersonal and relationship skills to include building alliances with schools and community organizations.
  • Knowledge of farm animal protection and issues related to industrialized animal agriculture; highly motivated toward promoting farm animal protection.
  • Ability to organize, supervise and motivate volunteers.
  • Proven self-starter with ability to work independently
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Must be punctual and maintain regular, predictable attendance.
  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal school curriculum requirements for New York and New Jersey a plus.
  • Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
  • Familiarity with and dedication to Farm Sanctuary’s vision, mission, and ethos
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds
Job Specifications
  • Full time, exempt position
  • Telecommuting position based in the New York city metropolitan area only, telecommuting from any other locations is not an option for this position.
  • Requires travel throughout the New York city metropolitan area and New Jersey
  • Flexibility to work some weekends and evenings for special programs as planned
